Masterpieces Interview

2020/09/29 – Today’s interview is with Robert Feltes. He is the National Sales Manager for Masterpieces Incorporated. Welcome Robert to Puzzles Forever!

Could you tell us a little about yourself and your role in Masterpieces?

“As the sales manager here at Masterpieces, my role is keeping our customers informed and supplied with the variety of family friendly MasterPieces products.”

 How would you describe the DNA of Masterpieces? Where did it come from, and where do you see it going?

“MasterPieces is the combination of unique skills and talents of our team; from our creative, development and design teams to our sales and fulfillment staff. Everyone is engaged in providing a fun and enjoyable puzzle, toy, or game experience for our customers. “

We have heard reports from numerous puzzle manufacturers about how Covid-19 has changed their business. Could you share some of the stories of how it affected Masterpieces, and how those experiences brought you to where you are now?

“As Covid-19 hit, the team at MasterPieces worked quickly to establish a safe workplace and continue to manufacture and deliver for our customers. Puzzle demand quickly changed a typical summer to demand greater than the holiday season. ”  

Long term what do you see as the trends in jigsaw puzzles? We have seen suggestions that a younger demographic is becoming more involved. Do you see this also?

“We see the recent trends bringing in many new ‘puzzlers’, including families and younger adults. As a complete puzzle manufacturer, we provide piece counts from 24 to 2000 pieces with art, themes and brands for all ages.”  

From an initial idea to final production, help us briefly understand the steps along the way in creating a new jigsaw puzzle.

“Great artwork is the start to a great puzzle, from here a quality thick puzzle board and interesting random die cuts make for solid fitting pieces that last. “

Many people may not be aware of the broad range of products Masterpieces produces. From puzzles and games, to the Fan Zone with products licensing MLB, NHL, NFL, NCAA, and NBA, to DIY Craft Kits, to Fan Pans. This is a diverse group of products. How do these fit into Masterpieces overall business plan?

“MasterPieces first offered our panoramic stadium puzzles about 10 years ago, every year we look to add 2-4 family friendly recognizable games or toys to our sports product offering. We also expanded from toys and games to a complete line of sports branded baby products with our Baby Fanatic line featuring pacifiers, bibs, any many additional items. Also new for 2020 is NFL licensed bakeware. You can now make your own ice, muffins, and cakes with NFL and select college team logos. Craft Kits fit our family friendly line of products. Everything you need to make a great work of art is included in our Works of Ahhh… craft kits.”        

We have heard about inventory being a problem for some manufacturers. What is your outlook for fourth quarter and the holiday season?

 “We’re doing our best to manage inventory. Replacement stock becomes available daily. I’d advise to submit holiday orders early this year.”
